Our Strelley clients Brenda and Paul have given up a portion of their home to build an extension to create an apartment for their disabled daughter. This will enable her to live more independently with the assistance of her carers. Therefore a generously proportioned but rarely used room within their cottage is to be transformed into an open plan dining, living and reading nook areas. Continue reading to see the transformation in more detail and watch the fabulous video that accompanies this project.
Living Area
Our clients requested seating for up to six people and taking into account Neo their pet dog, any fabrics would need to be practical and hard wearing. Additional lighting, replacement radiators, wallcoverings and a new T.V stand and television was also required. Brenda requested her lovely terracotta rug remain in the new design scheme.
Wallcoverings
A combination of a contemporary flock wallpaper and Farrow & Balls Elephants Breath emulsion paint were selected. The wallpaper has a gorgeous textural contemporary flock design by Black Edition; Jackson Flock in papyrus, supplied by Living HQ.
Seating
The corner unit was made by PF Collections. This bespoke corner unit was customised to reflect the height of our clients, so the seating depth was adjusted accordingly. The main fabric was wolf tooth by Art of the Loom with Crest JMT Shelly, silver birch leather piping. Oak legs with chrome tips completed the corner unit.
Cushions
To compliment the corner unit and existing area rug we chose plain velvet cushions in blood orange by OKA and cushions with various shades of blue with an orange stripe by John Lewis.
Armchair
A stylish and comfortable Morston armchair with tuck-away footstool was made by PF Collections. Upholstered in Linwood Belmont fabric with Crest JMT Shelly, silver birch leather piping. Oak grey washed legs completed the armchair design. A brick coloured velvet cushion by John Lewis added that finishing touch.
Nesting Footstools
Space saving nesting footstools, which are very versatile as act as additional tables or footstools, were made by PF Collections. Made in the same leather as the leather piping used on the corner unit and piped in the wolf tooth fabric. A Notre Monde indigo organic glass round tray by Houseology was placed on the footstools when used as a coffee table.
Television and Stand
A sleek black oak Techlink Panorama T.V stand by John Lewis was selected. With glass drop-down doors and plenty of storage to keep the area neat and tidy.
Samsung The Frame T.V, which mimics artwork was positioned above the T.V stand
Side Tables
A trio of hexagon metallic space saving tables were selected from Oliver Bonas. Finished in a brushed copper, gold and silver adding warmth and lustre to the overall design scheme. Mixed metals are very on trend this year and should hopefully continue as we adore mixing metals in numerous design projects.
Lighting & Accessories
An elegant pendant light was chosen from Black by Design. The Asteria pendant light in anthracite; it features a fabulous slimline profile incorporating a built in dimmable LED panel allowing you to set the light level according to your mood!
To complete the lighting the single leaf Midas Forna floor lamp from Rockett St George was selected. Adding an elegant, unique and sophisticated look to the living area.
Also from Rockett St George their honeycomb jewel vase in black and gold was placed on the T.V stand. The art deco style adds a further touch of class to the living area.
Dining Area
Our clients brief was to retain the handmade dresser; replace the radiator with a smaller more contemporary style, provide a new dining table and comfortable seating for four people. The built-in log burner was also to be retained.
Wallcoverings
Continuing the flow from the living area; a combination of a contemporary flock wallpaper and Farrow & Balls Elephants Breath emulsion paint were selected. The wallpaper has a gorgeous textural contemporary flock design by Black Edition; Jackson Flock in papyrus.
Dining Table & Chairs
The sleek timeless black oval dining table is from Turnbull & Thomas, the curved shape introduces softness to the area.
To compliment the terracotta area rug in the living area and create a balance in colours, shades of blue were introduces. The Flynn dining chair in royal blue velvet from Made.com, with comfortable seating was selected.
Lighting
The Garbo pendant light by David Hunt, supplied by Lights 4 Living, provided a timeless elegance; finished in bronze with black and bronze lined shades.
Rug
To break up the oak flooring and provide a lovely softness; the Nourison Twilight rug by the Rug Seller was introduced. Varying shades of blue, grey and white combined in a contemporary design created a stunning and modern look, which complimented the oak flooring beautifully.
Accessories
The Kildare oval mirror, in black with an inner gold trim from OKA, was the perfect size and shape to make a statement above the wood burner.
For further interest the Radstock bowl in blue glass and satin copper plate, created a gorgeous table centre piece.
The final touch is a lovely leafy green kentia palm plant by The Palm Centre with a practical black Hay plant pot and saucer by Connox.
Reading Nook
This is a beautiful sunny area to relax with a good book. We therefore created the perfect area for Brenda to help her relax and appreciate the lovely view of her garden.
Seating
A comfortable chair was imperative, therefore the Morston armchair with tuck-away footstool, from PF Collections was chosen. To compliment the living area; the Morston armchair was upholstered in the wolf tooth fabric with the silver birch leather piping.
Side Table & Lamp
To create further interest by implementing different textures in the form of stone and metal, the Hex side table was selected from west elm. Having a veined white marble top with warm antique brass base.
The quirky Cloche table lamp in black and brass from Amara was placed on the side table to aid night reading.
Book Storage
The Aero deco style shelving unit in brass from Swoon, adds a further touch of sophistication and much needed storage for Brenda’s books and ornaments.
Ceiling Light
The Franklite flush ceiling light in a gold leaf effect from Lights 4 Living added a beautiful elegance to the reading nook.
Accessories
For those cooler days, a chair throw in camel and grey from John Lewis was selected. The throw’s distinctive weave and contemporary block design combine to create a variety of interesting textural effects. To complete the look and provide a rich textural interest a gorgeous cushion in steel from John Lewis was placed on the armchair.
Window Treatments
For practical purposes roller blinds in contex fabric which has a woven appearance and made from fibreglass were fitted.
To add a touch of luxury, pelmets were made by Sunflower design. The fabric is Kempner Linen by Zinc Textile; a lustrous, crimped thread woven through the weft that creates a rippled textured surface.

Learning to love a multipurpose space
My designer Emma was great; she took time to help me work out what I needed from the space and what my tastes were. She then used this information together with her expertise to offer me choices and advice. She was always positive, enthusiastic and generous with her time, and gave me loads of practical help as well. We chose the project management option and it was marvellous, Emma sourced tradesmen, oversaw the work and dressed the room at the end of the project. She turned a nightmare room into a dream project. Thank you.
