Conscious living is on the rise, but it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to adapting your interiors. In this article, Hayley Baddiley from Denby offers her advice for transforming your kitchen to suit a more conscious lifestyle.
As we all try to become more conscious in 2020, you may be looking for ways to make more mindful decisions in all areas of your home. One of the most challenging areas to transform can be your kitchen, as more products come in and out of there than most other rooms in the house. This means food waste, plastic waste, and tired-looking décor can build up, none of which are ideal when you’re trying to live more sustainably, in addition to creating a cosy home. So, below are three of my top tips for creating a more conscious kitchen.

Buy local produce
Why not try skipping supermarkets and buying your food directly from local farm shops? That way, you’ll know that whatever you’re buying has been produced nearby rather than trucked across the country or imported. Farm shops usually offer fresh goods like meat, eggs, dairy, fruits, and vegetables, as well as a range of items for your cupboard.
Alternatively, you could ask your local butchers and greengrocers if they stock produce that comes from British farms. You can apply the same principle when shopping for non-perishable items, too, by purchasing homeware and kitchen accessories that have been made in the UK.
Avoid single use plastics
Everyone is trying to cut down their plastic waste, and the kitchen can generate a lot of it if you aren’t mindful of it. More and more plastic packaging is recyclable now, which means you can dispose of it more responsibly than sending it to landfill. So, you may want to check the label before throwing empty packaging in the bin.
There are steps you can take to reduce the amount of plastic you bring into your home in the first place. For example, you could buy loose whole fruits and vegetables instead of pre-portioned or packaged ones. Or, try taking your own containers to zero waste shops to stock up on dried ingredients.
Beat fast homewares
This refers to items that are produced quickly and cheaply to keep up with fleeting trends. These can break easily or go out of style, which means they often have to be thrown away and replaced sooner than you’d like.
By choosing high-quality, well-made furniture and décor in classic styles, you can be more confident that your homeware will stand the test of time. You could consider only buying interiors that are handcrafted rather than mass produced, as they’re usually made to a higher standard, and look for brands that offer guarantees on their products.
The tips in this guide can help you make more mindful decisions in all areas of your kitchen, from cooking to decorating. Bear them in mind the next time you go shopping and you’ll have a more conscious kitchen in no time.
